Artist's Comments

This is me trying to draw my own version of my favourite Delacroix painting, The Combat of the Giaour and Hassan (the subject is from a Byron poem). Delacroix is so hots, there wasn't going to be any beating his original, so I decided to think of it sort of as a cover for something, comic or magazine or whatever.

Your style is specially fantastic to gaze upon when you're working these ancient civilization themes on your pic. Great great work!

Blasted Barnackles!!

This is wonderful. It's interesting to see an interpretation of Delacroix in your more subdued watercolor palette. There is an interplay between the artistic subtlety and the romantic subject matter that is really cool.

I'd love to see what you'd make of The Barque of Dante. Ooh, or the Death of Sardanapalus!

"Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green, there hath he lain for ages and will lie battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep, until the latter fire shall heat the deep; then once by men and angels to be seen, in roaring he shall rise..."

I'm sure I've seen photos of the original at some point, but I can't remember, so this feels new to me. My favourite bit is how you've done the head of the white horse, flecks of spittle and all. Also: good font!

What is up with you - damn your talented ass!

Besides the gestures and the beautifully drawn horses, I love the colors in the scarf, how it fades from that red to light blue-ish gray.

Very nice. I think I know the painting it's from, but not the poem, though I like Byron too. The Orientalist painters are among my favourite guilty pleasures.

The style of this piece reminds me of Charles Vess and Michael W. Kaluta. Lovely work.

your delicate colours give me goosebumps. Thinking of doing sequentials of the poem?

Oooh, the Death of Sardanapalus would be so much fun. Sometime when I have an entire week free.
